Humane Society of El Paso holds 27th Annual K-9 Classic
The Humane Society of El Paso teamed up with animal-focused groups around the region Sunday to bring pet owners together for a good cause.
“This event is the Humane Society’s second largest fundraiser of the year,” said Betty Hoover, executive director for the Humane Society. “It’s probably the most fun event we have all year.”
Held at Eastwood Park, the 27th annual K-9 Classic drew hundreds of people and their pets. Walkers paid a $30 day-of registration fee for the first pet, and $5 for each extra to participate in the walk. Organizers said it’s as much for the dogs as it is for the humans, getting a chance to interact and play with other dogs from across the city.
“We want people to bond with their animals,” Hoover said, “because it’s so rewarding and so unique.”
Along with the walk, competitions were held for the largest and smallest dogs present, as well as the best tricks, kisses and swimsuits.
And to go along with the Humane Society’s mission, rescue groups also had many adoptable pets on display.
“All the proceeds from this event, that would be proceeds from the registrations and donations that we get, stay right here in El Paso and go back to the shelter to care for the animals,” Hoover said.
