trademark for generations. but now a video surfacing on social media has many borderland residents angry. it shows 2 individuals stealing lightbulbs from the star on the mountain. members of the el paso greater chamber of commerce also have some harsh words for the people who posted the video. abc-7’s jerry najera has more:.. did you know the star as we know it was first lit 70 years ago. it’s been a icon of the city ever since and after many have watched the video on facebook or snapchat they say something needs to be done to these alleged light bulb theives. the star on the moutain was first lit in 1940 and a bigger version was lit in 1946. not only is the star an icon of the city but it’s been used to commemorate el pasoans accomplishments and celebrations of life. even the pope himself has gotten lit by the shing beacon. so it’s no surprise after this snapchat video surfaced of what appears to be a man and a woman removing bulbs from the star –there would be some backlash. “i don’t think that was a joke” “it’s disrespectfu “it’s totally disrespectful” i the video you can see the two removing the lightbulbs from the star. the video also shows them wearing special gloves to handle what could be the heat from the lightbulbs. the name of the user is covered and although it was posted on facebook friday night–it’s unclear when the video was actually taken. but those abc-7 spoke with cley think something should be done “i say prosecute them “prosecute them” “i don’t thi that was a joke and i think the person should be responsible for what he did. that’s a main attraxction here in el paso and i dont think it’s something to joke about and once you let something like that go people are just going to do what they want and think they can get away with everything” and it doesn’t appear they’ll get away with anything anytime soon… abc-7 reached out to the el paso greater chamber of commerce, which is the organization that maintains the star. in a statement, president richard dayoub tells us quote: “this is arrogance an stupidity..the star is an icon for the community this is a theft and trespassing that affects tax payers and we will prosecute to the full extent of the law.” the individuals also posted a picture of where they put those light bulbs they used them right in their home dayoub tells me they do have cameras in the area and they will be looking at that video. we have a traffic alert to remind you about… starting tomorrow– i-10 west will be completely closed between buena vista — a-k-a the bridge to nowhere — and sunland park. this will happen nightly until july 20th, except for friday and saturdays. it will begin at 9 pm and open back up at 5 am the following morning. the district engineer for texdot– bob bielik says crews will be placing beams and columns over i-10 west. he says people will be able to get off the sunland park exit and be able to immediately get back on: 2:11 “you would exit at sunland park, and that little slip ramp that used to take you from paisano to i-10, you’ll be able to take that ramp or go through the light at sunland park and get on the entrance ramp on the north side of sunland park.” again, that closure is not in effect friday or saturday night. a major truck crash on a railroad crossing in the lower valley has now resulted in major changes for what can happen at that intersection, alameda and oil mill drive. :13 :41 1:19 it’s a pretty dramatic sight – a tractor- trailor knocked on its side after getting stuck on a railroad crossing in the lower valley. noone was seriously hurt here, but it wasn’t the first time there had been problems with big trucks at that crossing. “these are some slides that show the continual damage at the railroad crossing as those large trucks cannot clear it. and it’s just a continual damage. and this was the latest accident that occurred at the rail crossing.” “it’s not the safes of situations.” county judge veronica escobar and the rest of commissioner’s court voted to restrict crossing by trucks over 32 feet long for the future… with signage to be placed around it making that clear. “the heav trucks that go over it, they’ve degraded the crossing, because it’s at a unique elevation. and so the railroad actually approached the commissioner, commissioner perez about this, and about closing it, while they number one, work to make changes to the crossing, but more importantly, work to not make any more hazards.” and with more emphasis on infrastrucutre on the outskirts of the county… and the growth of areas around the tornillo port of entry … more issues like this may have to be addressed in the future. andrew j. polk, abc-7. the installation of new traffic signs in the county usually takes a few weeks. the
