cause for concern in the borderland as well. turkish residents living here in el paso see the heartwrenching images as they watch the news and feel helpless over the turmoil going on in thier country. abc-7’s jerry najera spoke with a turkish born resident he is live with the story… evan josie i spoke with sabri agachan. he is the president of the raindrop turkish house. it’s a turkish community home and cultural center. he tells me the recent attempt of a take over in turkey is not the answer to the country’s problems. “we can say between 200 to 50 turkish people live around el paso” sabri agachan was born in istanbul the capital of turkey. he tells me current president recep erdegon has been in political power for 14 years. and to a point he’s done some good things for the country “they mak lot’s of beautiful things like roads hospitals” bu agachan was quick to add to much power changes people their character their personality and their goals. “in 2013 there was a big corruption issue that happened including the turkish president with his his son ” agachan says th erdegon prime minister at the time was accused of misusing the countries funds. that led to some distrust in the government. “afterwards man things changes in turkey” agachan says since then the president has aquired more control of the country almost like a dictatorship. “whoever want to write against the turkish government those journalist those writers could go to jail so right now you cannot talk about freedom of media in turkey” he says the turkish government has taken over media outlets and much of the older population who just watch televesion are influenced by the news. but the younger generation he says –uses social media and are more aware of the governments operations now. “so unfortunately turkey is going to a one man country” although the group that attempted the coup say they are fighting for a better country agachan says a coup is not the way to a better future. “in turkey we cannot go backwards from democracy. democracy is the only way we can be successful” agachan condones the killings that took part during the coup. he says since the beginning of the 20th century the turkish people have overcome hardships and hopes they will overcome this situation too. it’s a trend that is still on
