Texas cemetery promises changes after discrimination claim
NORMANNA, Texas (AP) – A South Texas cemetery is promising not to discriminate when it provides burial services after cemetery officials earlier refused to bury a Hispanic man.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports (http://bit.ly/29UXMvS ) an agreement was reached Friday between the Normanna Cemetery Association and the American GI Forum of Texas.
The family of Pedro Barrera says the association would not bury him at San Domingo Cemetery following his death in February because of his ethnicity.
The dispute drew the interest of civil rights leaders and a protest was held at the cemetery in Normanna, about 60 miles northwest of Corpus Christi.
Association members say the matter was a misunderstanding. They say the cemetery was intended for the descendants of the town’s founders, who were mostly white.
