City sees rise in number of deadly pedestrian crashes; offers safety tips
2016 has seen more than triple the amount of deadly pedestrian crashes compared to last year.
15 people have been killed on El Paso’s roadways this year, compared to four this same time in 2015.
In light of the uptick, the El Paso Police Department is offering safety tips for people walking on roadways.
– When crossing a roadway, cross at a designated crosswalk or intersection
– When walking during non-daylight hours, where reflective clothing and carry flashlight to increase visibility.
– Always walk on the sidewalk when available. If you must walk on the road, walk on the shoulder or closest to the curb, and walk facing traffic.
– Don’t get distracted with cell phones or electronic devises. Keep your attention focused on traffic.
– Avoid alcohol consumption.
– Pedestrians are not allowed on the interstate and should never attempt to cross interstate lanes of traffic.
DRIVERS:
– Be on the lookout for pedestrians as you drive, pull into or out of driveways.
– Always yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk.
– Follow posted speed limits.
– If you drink, don’t drive.
