SISD holds open house for incoming students
The Socorro Independent School District held an open house Friday.
The district is preparing to usher in more than 45,000 students into its classrooms beginning Monday morning.
“We’re excited to open up the school year Monday, it’s one of the most exciting days of the whole school year,” said SISD superintendent Jose Espinoza.
The district opened its doors Friday so students could see their new classrooms.
For many students, it meant they got to meet their teachers for the first time.
Espinoza says the district that oversees 47 schools is ready to offer many programs for students.
“This year, we are opening up Pre-K for all students whether, they qualify through economic disadvantage or not. It’s free Pre-k for all of our students within our district boundaries,” Espinoza said.
Espinoza tells ABC-7 the district’s dual credit program has taken off.
The courses allow students to earn college hours while working toward their high school diploma.
“Last year, with all the dual credit classes that our students took, they saved over $5.7 million that they would have had to pay colleges or universities,” Espinoza said.
The superintendent says the students won’t be the only ones benefiting from from the districts programs.
Parents can also attend English as a second language classes, citizenship classes or earn a G.E.D.
“It’s also important in our district to continue to give opportunities to adults, so that they can have a brighter future for themselves and their children,” Espinoza said.
Espinoza also wants to remind drivers to be cautious of students at cross walks and bus stops come Monday to keep everyone safe.
