El Paso fit for revolutionary freight shuttle system, transportation institute says

A private company is trying to change the way our country transports goods internationally.

The Texas A&M Transportation Institute has created a system it believes will quadruple productivity and reduce pollution.

The Freight Shuttle System involves the use of a single autonomous transporter on steel wheels to carry truck trailers or shipping containers. This is done on a dedicated and elevated “guideway” built in an existing highway right of way and powered by linear induction electric motors with no moving parts.

The institution sees El Paso as an area that could benefit greatly by this shuttle system.

There are several challenges that must be overcome to create the border system.

One requirement would be a presidential permit to build the infrastructure into the United States and Mexico. Approval for that process alone could take two years.
