is supposed to be one of the safest places to keep important documents and valuables, but a man in las cruces claims that his box was drilled open by the bank, and now valuables that were inside are gone. abc-7’s stephen decatur has the story. jerry white: “how can you replace jewlry from parents that have passed, i was very upset and didn’t eat or sleep well for several days” stephen: that’s the voice of jerry white, he’s describing what he felt after discovering some of contents of his safe deposit box at bank of the west were gone. jerry white: “they took me to the vault an we found out my box had been drilled along with apparently every other box in the vault.” stephen: it al began on june 3rd when bank of the west mailed this letter notifying it’s customers the 2-0-1 church street location was relocating within the same building and that those who have a safe deposit box must come to move there box to the new vault no later than august 12th. but when white arrived on august 8th the bank had already emptied his box. jerry white: “they took me back into the office and gave me a plastic bag, with an invatory on the outside and wanted me to sign that they had recieved everything” stephen: but whit claimes a number of items were missing, and then the bank handed him this. a certificate of entry for safe deposit box forced open, which stated that the reason the box was drilled opened was because it had been abandoned. jerry white: so i showed them the recipt paying for a year starting in january. stephen: the same document also shows the bank drilled into the the box more than two weeks before the deadline that they had given in the mailed notice. jerry white: i later found out from an employee that over 600 boxes were drilled in two days. stephen: we reached out to bank of the west in las of the west in las cruces, and we recieved this statement “we’re looking into the matte and working with the customer directly. as a matter of practice, we don’t comment on customer accounts or share our current non-public documentation.” and white say they’ve been equally un- helpful with him. stephen: white has filed a police report with las cruces pd and this is an on going investigation, from our new mexico mobile news room in las cruces. i’m stephen decatur abc-7. white hopes that other bank of the west customers who may have experienced the same issue come forward and file complaints. protesters in texas are calling a new college history book “racist dozens in austin gathered outside of a meeting where the texas state board of education held a hearing on a controversial textbook on mexican-american history. the demonstrators, including professors, say the book is full of inaccuracies and factual errors.
