Residents dispute neighbor’s request for mixed-use development

A woman living in Kern Place had her hopes of turning her property into a mixed-use development dashed. On Thursday, dozens of Kern Place residents opposed to the re-zoning crowded into the council chambers to present their concerns to the City Plan Commission. The current zoning for the area under question does not allow for mixed-use development. However, the commission has the ability to change it. “Just keep Kern residential,” said one resident, while another added, “I urge you to reject the spot zoning request.” The current property on the 500 block of Gregory Avenue is a home that houses four apartments. The proposed design would include a quadra-plex, art studio and office space. The home would expand by more than 2,000 square feet, which opponents say is too big. After hearing the concerns from residents, the City Plan Commission rejected the proposal. The homeowner plans to appeal the rejection to city council.
