Pink Walk: Dozens take steps to help fight breast cancer

Dozens of people laced up their sneakers and took part in the eighth annual Pink Walk.

The annual walk is organized every October by the Hospitals of Providence for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The hospital, however, not only wants to raise awareness, but urge people to have a plan to detect the disease in it’s early stages.

“It is a tradition for us to do this walk during Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” said Diane Escapita, a mammography technician at Providence-East. “It’s just to remind women to get their mammograms. Mammograms detect cancer early, and even before it’s felt. Early detection is key to treat the cancer easier.”

During Friday’s walk, the hospital provided information on breast examinations, mammogram procedures and how early detection is the best prevention. The walk 1.1-mile walk also gave the public a chance to honor individuals whole lost their fight with breast cancer, those who are battling breast cancer and breast-cancer survivors.

Women who do not have insurance were able to get a mammogram for a discounted price of $60 on Friday. Organizers also sold T-shirts to raise money for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
