Hunter’s Supermoon brightens Borderland sky this weekend
You’ll want to look to the sky Sunday night to see the first of three “supermoons” that will close out 2016. Sunday night’s supermoon carries extra significance.
The moon reached its closest point, or perigee, at 8 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. MT. It will be followed by two other supermoons on Nov. 14 and Dec.14. Experts at NASA report the November supermoon will be the closest the full moon has come to Earth in the 21st century, and the closest it will be before 2034.
According to National Geographic, the full moon in October is known as “the hunter’s moon” in North America.
While in other months the moon would rise above the horizon 50 minutes later each day, this month it’s just 30 minutes later. For traditional hunters, that offered more light after sunset during the important fall season to stalk game and stock up before winter.
