Police identify man shot by officer Saturday; allegedly lunged at officer with knife

A police officer responding to a “suicide in progress” call shot a man who lunged at him with a knife, police officials said Monday.

The shooting involving the officer happened shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday on the 100 block of S. Glenwood.

The officer met with Francisco Ramirez, 32, while responding to a 911 call. Police officials said Ramirez “was confrontational with the officer and advanced at the officer with a knife.”

The officer ordered Ramirez to drop the weapon, but Ramirez lunged towards the officer with the knife, police officials said.

The officer fired his handgun and struck Ramirez, later rushed to University Medical Center (UMC) for treatment.

Police said a warrant against Ramirez has been issued on a charge of Aggravated Assault on a Peace Officer.

The officer, a nine year veteran of the police department, has been placed on Administrative Leave while the shooting is investigated.

Ramirez’s relatives told ABC-7 Saturday Ramirez was shot five time. Police did not confirm how many rounds the officer fired and how many times Ramirez was struck.
