City Rep. Acosta formally announces candidacy for mayor

District 3 City Representative Emma Acosta officially announced her candidacy for Mayor of El Paso Tuesday.

Acosta formally filed forms naming Belen Robles, a board member of the El Paso Community College Board of Trustees, as the campaign treasurer for the “Emma Acosta for El Paso” campaign.

“We have a great leader in Emma. She can lead, secure, and ensure that our city keeps evolving and growing in all corners of our community,” Robles stated in a news release, “Emma has an open-door policy for her constituents, is a strong advocate of transportation issues, veterans and the disabled community.”

Rudy Escajeda, a Vietnam veteran and owner of “El Zarape” restaurant, endorsed Acosta. “She is a native El Pasoan and realizes what El Paso needs. She welcomes all Veterans to El Paso,” Escajeda said, “No other elected official has done this for us and this is something that will last forever.”

Acosta Tuesday touted her achievements as a City Councilor:

Support for the development of the Fountains at Farah Help obtaining a grant for the Medical Center of the Americas Economic Development Program Uber Ordinance that levels the playing field for taxis Hawkins median beautification and lighting Support for the Alameda Brio

“I proactively championed the restructuring of the Water Utility Board so all El Pasoans would have an opportunity to serve on this very important board, as well as the creation of a Veterans Commission, and the development of a business ordinance that would provide ADA accessibility construction in a faster low-cost manner including the creation of zero to low cost interest loans for small businesses,” Acosta stated in a news release.

Other candidates running for mayor include David E. Saucedo, Jorge Artalejo, Donald “Dee” Margo, Ana Romero Zaidle, Charles R. Stapler, Jameel D. Toombs, and Emma Acosta.

Cassandra Hernandez-Brown and Jaime Barceleau running for the District 3 seat vacated by Acosta.

Sam Morgan, Diana Ramos, and Shane Haggerty are running for the Disctrict 4 seat vacated by Carl Robinson, who could not run for re-election because of term limits.
