New Years brings boost to local gyms

The new year has local gyms seeing dollar signs.

In January, EP Fitness added over 800 new members. Management said they expect an even bigger boost in 2017.

“I would see an increase of 30 percent of more people coming in only because they want a New Years resolution,” EP Fitness sales representative Cassidy Rios said. “They want results. and then it will slowly die out. Just depending on the person.”

A poll from US News and World Report said that 80 percent of New Years resolutions only last until February.

“They kind of want fit, fast results, and this is something that takes time and consistency,” trainer Maria O’Connor said. “If you don’t have that, if you’re not dedicated, then you’re not going to see the results you’re expecting.” Lola Ruiz is a member at EP Fitness. She said her New Year’s resolution was a success this year. “I lost about 60 pounds, now I’m just focused on toning,” Ruiz said. “I think it’s a mind setting. You need to focus, stay focused and just continue. Find people that motivate you, motivate yourself, and just continue.” Trainer Ivan Sanchez said it’s best not to put pressure on a particular date to start working out. He recommends starting on a date that works best for you. “It’s always best to take it slow as you’re coming in,” Sanchez said. “I think to me those are the people that are almost always succeed. They’re just willing to start.”
