BREAKING: Congressman Beto O’Rourke launches campaign for U.S. Senate

It’s official! Democratic U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke has announced his campaign for the U.S. Senate in his bid to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz.

O’Rourke’s campaign team sent an email to supporters Wednesday morning revealing that “a big announcement” was coming Friday.

The campaign kickoff will be live-streamed on Facebook in his hometown of El Paso beginning at 10 a.m.

After the launch in El Paso, the 44-year-old is scheduled to host meet and greets in Dallas, Waco, Austin, and Houston.

Friday, March 31st at 6:30 p.m. CT at Eight Bells Alehouse (831 Exposition Ave., Dallas, TX 75226)

Saturday, April 1st at 8:00 a.m. CT at Common Grounds (1123 S. 8th St., Waco, TX 76706)

Saturday, April 1st at 4:00 p.m. CT at Scholz Garten (1607 San Jacinto Blvd., Austin, TX 78701)

Sunday, April 2nd at 3:00 p.m. CT at IBEW Local 716 (1475 N. Loop W., Houston, TX 77008)

The former punk rocker will kickoff the campaign at the Alcantar Sky Garden, a rooftop convention space in his hometown of El Paso on Friday.

O’Rourke is a fourth generation Texan. He and his wife Amy are raising their family in El Paso. The Spanish-speaking, third-term House member, insists Cruz is beatable.

Cruz finished second to Donald Trump in last year’s crowded GOP presidential primary field and remains powerful in Texas – which hasn’t elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994.

O’Rourke may face an earlier challenge before facing Cruz. The Democratic Senate primary could feature fellow U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro, who might be favored because of stronger name recognition across Texas.
