Canutillo ISD says it is not against new development

The Canutillo school board says it is not against new development in the district, as it attempts to clarify a controversial move made by board members in February.

Back in February, the board tried approving a resolution against a new low income development in Vinton. Some board members argued that it would bring more low-income students without any funding to provide for them. While the measure failed, it triggered a firestorm from critics who say the district needs to educate children regardless of a child’s ethnicity or income level.

On Tuesday, the board released a new statement, saying it’s not against the development, but wants to preserve the “open space and rural character enjoyed by our community.”
