Payless ShoeSource to close 4 stores in El Paso after filing for bankruptcy

Payless ShoeSource announced Wednesday morning that it will close four stores in El Paso.

The retailer filed filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Tuesday.

The stores in Cielo Vista Mall, Sunland Park Mall, 119 S. Stanton and 1900 N. Lee Trevino are closing. The company will not close stores in Las Cruces.

The retailer announced they will close the locations immediately.

Retailers are struggling to survive in the age of online shopping. Experts said companies like Amazon and eBay have caused a decline of customers going into stores across malls in America.

“This is a difficult, but necessary, decision driven by the continued challenges of the retail environment, which will only intensify,” Payless CEO W. Paul Jones said in a statement.

The company will close a nearly 400 stores in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. Payless had more than 4,400 stores in over 30 countries, according to its website. It will now have less.

A page on the company’s website has a list of which stores are closing around the country.
