Man involved in shooting at I-25 checkpoint dies

UPDATE:

The man involved in a shooting at the U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on I-25 near Las Cruces, N.M., last month has died, announced FBI officials Friday.

Officials with the FBI Albuquerque Division said the adult, who sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was not struck by agents, died at a local hospital on Friday.

It was previously reported by U.S. Custom and Border Protection officials that the man had been shot by Border Patrol agents after he fired a shot at the direction of the agents during a secondary inspection.

FBI officials now state the man approached the primary inspection lane at the checkpoint on April 9, 2017, and was referred to a secondary inspection.

Agents said they heard a gunshot and fired their weapons.

No agents were hurt.

The incident is being investigated by the FBI and U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Professional Responsibility.

The FBI El Paso Division Evidence Response Team assisted.

The individual will not be identified because no charges were filed.
