County votes to retain the sale of alcohol at County SportsPark
County Commissioners got into a heated discussion over the sale of alcohol at the County SportsPark during Monday’s meeting.
Commissioner Carlos Leon introduced a motion to ban the sale of alcohol at the park because he said there are a lot of youth sports being played.
“This park is really a youth park. When I go out there I see little Tee-ballers, and kids playing that are teenagers,” Leon said. “One of the things that I think about is how many of these people leave the park having two, three or six beers.”
Commissioner Andrew Haggerty disagreed with Leon’s motion.
“We’ve already banned tobacco. Why don’t we get rid of red meat while we’re at it,” Haggerty said.
The County’s public works department conducted a survey of park users to see how they felt about alcohol being sold.
The results do not show a strong desire from those surveyed to prohibit alcohol.
“I don’t like it when the government says we’re going to ban this, we’re going to ban that,” Haggerty said.
As it stands right now on weekends alcohol is sold from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturdays, and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
The County has directed staff to look at ways they could potentially change the hours alcohol is sold. That will be discussed at a later meeting.
