Regional Mobility Authority votes to get rid of Border Highway toll lanes

The toll roads on the Cesar Chavez Border Highway will soon be a thing of the past.

Tuesday morning, the Camino Real Regional Mobile Authority voted to get rid of the toll lanes.

Crews will start the process of removing all highway tolls as early as September 1, 2017.

Drivers will continue paying tolls until the toll lanes are completely removed.

According to a report released last year, the toll lanes averaged fewer than 2,000 transactions per day, since they were opened in 2014.

Total revenues were less the $700,000, while expenses exceeded $1.2 million.
