Details on former Las Cruces police officer accused of extortion, threatening to leak nude photos

Court documents obtained Tuesday by ABC-7 reveal that a former Las Cruces police officer allegedly extorted a woman with naked photographs he obtained without her consent.

Las Cruces police arrested William Gonzalez, 28, on Saturday in connection with harassment, voyeurism and extortion, according to court documents.

Over the course of several days, Gonzalez sent more than 100 text messages to the woman and made more than 30 phone calls that were “hostile and degrading in nature,” causing her “severe emotional distress,” the court documents read. He had a previous relationship with the woman.

Police also accuse Gonzalez of taking naked photographs of the victim, including incidents where she was naked in a bathroom and breastfeeding a child.

Six specific text messages sent to the victim prove an intent to “solicit sexual intercourse in exchanging for the deletion and non-release of the intimate photographs of her,” the court documents read.

In the initial news release, Gonzalez was booked on a $100,000 cash bond.

A Las Cruces police spokesman later confirmed that his initial bond was reduced to a $2,500 surety bond.

ABC-7’s New Mexico Mobile Newsroom attempted to reach Gonzalez at his east Las Cruces residence, but he did not appear to be home.

Las Cruces police would not comment on the case because of possible pending litigation.
