Lower Valley church fire causes $600,000 worth of damage
Thousands of people lost power due to a church fire Wednesday afternoon in the Lower Valley.
El Paso Electric spokesman George de la Torre told ABC7 the outage in East El Paso is impacting about 2,000 customers.
The fire broke out about 1 p.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church 7615 Matamoros Drive. There was no one inside the building when firefighters arrived.
A fire department spokesman said the fire was accidental, caused by roofers repairing the roof. The fire caused the roof to collapse.
The fire was contained at about 3:30 p.m. and no injuries were reported. The fire department reported that the fire caused about $600,000 in damage.
