Two players from El Paso selected on third day of MLB Draft

Two former high school stars from El Paso were selected on day three of the 2017 MLB Draft Wednesday.

The San Francisco Giants selected shortstop Orlando Garcia, a former star at Americas, in the 15th round. Garcia now plays for Texas Tech and was recently named to the All-Big 12 first team.

Garcia was also named one of five finalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the best shortstop in the nation.

Garcia’s brother, Oscar, was drafted in 2010 as well out of Americas High School.

The Philadelphia Phillies chose outfielder Yahir Gurrola, who played at El Dorado, in the 27th round of the draft.

Gurrola played at Midland College after high school before starring for North Florida

He set a single-season school record for hits during his 2013 season with El Dorado with 45. He then helped lead the Aztecs to a bi-district title in the 2014 season.
