Hundreds of students in Las Cruces to receive free backpacks, school supplies for school year
For the twelfth year in a row, hundreds of disadvantaged students in Las Cruces public schools will receive backpacks and school supplies ahead of their school year.
Members of Memorial Medical Center filled up a truck Wednesday with stuffed backpacks. The backpacks included some school supplies like pencils, crayons, paper and tissues that will be sent to LCPS students in grades kindergarten to third.
“When you think about school supplies, $40 to $50, and you’re thinking about a pair of shoes, you have parents sitting there saying, ‘What do I do? Do I buy the school supplies that they need or do I buy the shoes that they need?'” Yolanda Silva, LCPS Social Worker for Federal Programs said. “So, absolutely, this is what really helps our families be able to do both.”
MountainView Regional Medical Center will hold their donation day Friday, Aug. 4 at 2:30 p.m.
“Since the demand for school supplies continues to grow every year, we’re grateful that MountainView graciously offered their support,” Brigitte Zigelhofer, LCPS Community Outreach Liaison, said.
