Slain Ysleta teenager lived with grandparents
Police tell ABC-7 the search for the gunman or gunmen who fatally shot 17-year-old Juan Cervantes continues.
Police say the shooting happened around 9:15 pm Wednesday, October 18, 2017 on the 8400 block of Hughes Circle. Cervantes lived on the street, which is less than a mile from his school. The teenager died from the gunshot wounds Thursday morning.
ABC-7 has learned Cervantes was a senior at Ysleta High School, where some of his fellow classmates are still trying to come to grips with the loss.
Students learned about Cervantes’ death Thursday morning as their first period teachers told them what had happened.
His friends told ABC-7 Juan Cervantes was a happy person and made everyone laugh. Cervantes lived with his grandparents, and some friends ABC-7 spoke with said they’re hoping to make these hard times easier on Cervantes’ grieving family.
“My friend and I want to start a GoFundMe page to help out his grandparents, to help pay for funeral expenses, since they might be tight on a budget. WE thought it might be helpful, it would help out the family,” said Arturo Sanchez, one of Cervantes’ close friends.
El Paso Police said they are still looking for suspects. They ask that anyone with information call 915-832-4400.
