Border Patrol agent involved in shooting identified

The U.S. Border Patrol agent involved in the deadly shooting in Socorro on Jan. 14 has been identified as Luis Chavez.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said it is being investigated as a possible case of self-defense.

ABC-7 reported that day that the Socorro Police Department was called to the scene at Melendez Street in Socorro to investigate what started as an aggravated assault in progress.

Officers found a man dead with gunshot wounds. A Border Patrol agent was confirmed to be involved in the shooting. The case was later turned over to the sheriff’s office.

The man who was killed was identified Wednesday as Juan Daniel Jacques. The sheriff’s spokeswoman told ABC-7 Chavez is the suspected shooter.

Border Patrol and sheriff’s officials told ABC-7 Wednesday that the agent was off-duty at the time and the shooting wasn’t related to his job.
