NMSU men’s basketball coach Chris Jans signs contract extension
New Mexico State University has secured a one-year contract extension with head men’s basketball Chris Jans, keeping him in Las Cruces through the 2022-23 season.
The university announced the deal on Wednesday, which comes on the heels of Jans winning a program record 30 games last season. It surpassed the previous record of 28 wins — which Jans tied during his first year as coach. He also led the Aggies to their 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance, earning the 12th-seed for the second-straight year.
Jans, a two-time Western Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, said he appreciated the confidence NMSU has shown in both he and his coaching staff and thanked the community for its generous support of the team.
Athletic Director Mario Moccia said inking an extension with Jans was a top priority for NMSU.
“In his two years our 58-11 record is the third-best winning percentage in the nation behind Virginia and Gonzaga and his career winning percentage as a head coach is fourth in the nation behind Mark Few, Roy Williams and John Calipari,” Moccia observed.
Jans will continue to make a base salary of $290,000 a year, but his retention incentive bonus will go up.
In November, Jans is set to receive a bonus of $139,000 which was established as part of his previous contract, but under the new contract the bonus will increase to $216,000.
NMSU Director of Athletics Mario Moccia says the additional funds are coming from private donors.
Moccia says retaining Jans was a top priority for NMSU.
“Chris has performed beyond our expectations and his 58 and 11 record over two years certainly shows that,” Moccia said. “It was great that we could augment his contract further and additionally solidify him for another year, so he’s under contract for four years.”
