EPPD releases 2017 racial profiling report

The El Paso Police Department is expected to present the results of its Racial Profiling 2017 Data Analysis Report to city council Tuesday.

The State of Texas requires police departments to track traffic stops, citations and arrests then organize the data based on racial backgrounds.

In 2017, the report shows out of the 85,360 stops El Paso police officers made one in four was a Caucasian person.

The data shows that Caucasians make up 14 percent of the total population in El Paso. Officers pulled over 20,743 Caucasians, accounting for 24 percent of traffic stops.

Similarly, African-Americans make up around 3 percent of the population, but when it comes to traffic stops, 4 percent, 3,792, were stopped.

Hispanics are the majority racial group in our city, making up 80 percent of the population, 60,056 were pulled over in 2017.

Three racial profiling complaints were brought against the El Paso Police Department last year, however the study, conducted by two University of North Texas professors, found the force to be in compliance with the law.
