New Mexico National Guard visiting Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station

U.S. Custom and Border Protection West Texas tweeted a photo Sunday afternoon showing several members of the Army National Guard at the Santa Teresa Border Patrol Station.

The tweet states in part, “USBP A/DC Patrol Agent D. Toothman briefing NM Task Force Commander LTC G. Vargas and support staff on current trends in the field at US, Mexico Intl. Border Monument 14.”

The tweet comes on the heels of both Texas and Arizona quickly announcing the deployment of National Guard troops to secure the U.S. – Mexico Border. The first of 4,000 National Guard troops were authorized to deploy this weekend by President Trump. Both New Mexico and California have remained silent on the issue.

The Department of Homeland Security said attempted border crossings increased by 200 percent in March, compared with last year, when illegal border crossings were at a historic low.
