Poll: Ted Cruz-Beto O’Rourke Senate race too close to call
A new poll shows Republican Ted Cruz may have a fight on his hands if he wants to keep his Senate seat.
A Quinnipiac University poll showed 47 percent of registered voters in Texas back Cruz, while 44 percent favor the Democratic candidate, El Paso Rep. Beto O’Rourke.
Those numbers fall within the margin of error in the poll, meaning the race is essentially a toss-up.
Republicans are looking to keep their majority in the Senate and Democrats are hoping to win their first U.S. Senate race in Texas since 1988.
Following the poll results, it didn’t take long for social media to explode with reaction and opinions on the Beto O’Rourke – Ted Cruz race.
The chairs of the Democratic and Republican parties for El Paso County also weighed in.
“He’s doing something that Democrats just haven’t done in Texas in a very very long time, which is to go, or try to go to every single county,” said Illiana Holguin, the chair of the El Paso County Democratic Party.
“You know the polls, while they say it is a scientific test, it is somebody’s guess. It depends on who calls and who answers. So, I don’t put a lot of faith in polls at all,” said Adolfo Telles, the chair of the El Paso Republican Party.
The Houston Chronicle reported voters under the age of 35 are overwhelmingly supporting O’Rourke. Fifty percent of people in the poll between the ages of 18 and 34 are supporting the El Paso Democrat with just 34 percent supporting Cruz.
But among older voters, Cruz is dominating. Voters between 50 years old and 64 sided with Cruz 53 percent of the time. Just 41 percent were backing O’Rourke.
“Turning Texas blue is something that everyone said is not going to be possible, anytime in the near future and I think we are on track to prove everybody wrong,” said Holguin.
Beto O’Rourke tweeted: “Together, this grassroots campaign has continued to show what’s possible when you reject pacs, special interests and politics as usual. We’re going to continue running this campaign the right way – putting our trust completely with the people of texas.”
Ted Cruz– in a tweet– thanked Mark Lavin, a conservative commentator, for his support said: “thanks! The hard left is raising big $$ coming after us, campaigning on gun control, open borders & impeaching the president. Very much appreciate the patented Levin surge, supporting me at http://www.tedcruz.org.”
“I think Cruz is going to take him very serious, I think Cruz is going to campaign very aggressively,” Telles said.
