Document: Man placed frozen bacon package on head of unresponsive infant
The man accused of violently shaking his infant daughter allegedly told police he placed a frozen package of bacon on the infant’s face after he found her unresponsive, a criminal complaint obtained by ABC-7 states.
Police charged Steve Estrada, 27, with “Injury to a Child resulting in Serious Bodily Injury” after an investigation revealed the victim suffered severe swelling and bleeding to the brain.
Estrada told police his daughter’s mother left to work and he was taking care of the 7-week-old infant on May 5, 2018 at a residence on the 5100 block of Chromite. The criminal complaint states Estrada told police his daughter missed a feeding and was “crying excessively” when she woke up.
The document further states Estrada told investigators he was preparing a bottle for the girl when he noticed she had stopped crying. When he reentered the room, the girl was unresponsive. “The defendant describes the victim as limp and gasping for air, the defendant calls a family member and does not call 911 for emergency assistance,” the criminal complaint states.
Under interrogation, Estrada allegedly told detectives “he placed a frozen package of bacon on the victim’s face and still did not get a response from her,” the criminal complaint states.
After the girl was taken to a hospital, a CT scan allegedly revealed “severe swelling and bleeding to the victims brain,” the court document states, adding a doctor told investigators the “child’s injuries were non-accidental and indicative of child abuse (shaken baby syndrome.”
Police said the infant continues to receive medical care. Estrada was jailed on a $250,000 bond.
