National Police Week: El Paso Sheriff’s Office to honor officers killed in the line of duty

It is National Police Week and numerous events are underway in Washington, D.C. for officers who were killed in the line of duty.

In El Paso, fallen officers will also be remembered beginning Tuesday. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office will host its 2nd Annual County Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony to honor the officers who died.

Last year the sheriff’s office unveiled it’s memorial wall with the names of officers killed in El Paso County and surrounding municipalities.

“Unfortunately, there’s 14 names of individuals who’ve given their lives to protect us citizens of this county,” said Sheriff Richard Wiles.

The first recorded death was of a county constable in 1881 and the most recent was Constable Robert White who was killed in 2014.

“These are individuals who work every day, understanding how dangerous their job is and sometimes very unpredictable,” Wiles said.

The ceremony is on Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the sheriff’s office headquarters located at 3850 Justice Drive.

The El Paso Police Department will hold its own memorial on Friday at Charles Heinrich Park at 9 a.m. in northeast El Paso.
