LCPD: Officer shot bicyclist 4 times during arrest
Las Cruces Police say an officer who was assisting in an April 27 pursuit of a man riding a bicycle shot the bicyclist four times while he was being detained by another officer.
Myron Oveide, 29, was ignoring commands from an LCPD officer to stop and led the officer to a pursuit which ultimately ended with Oveide being chased down by foot, police say.
Oveide allegedly led officers to Gardner Avenue where two LCPD officers stopped and began to detain him. One of the officers tried to detain Oveide and yelled commands, “put your hands up!” and “you’re resting” towards him.
According to police, video from one of the officer’s lapel camera showed Oveide possessing what appeared to be a handgun. Oveide allegedly turned the apparent handgun towards one of the officers and that officer shot him four times.
Police later determined that the apparent handgun was a BB gun resembling a full-size SIG Sauer 1911 handgun.
Oveide was transported to Mountainview Regional Medical Center where he remained until he was discharged recently from the hospital. The officers were not physically injured.
Oveide was charged with Aggravated Assault Upon a Peace Officer and Resisting, Evading or Obstructing an Officer.
The officer who fired his gun was placed on administrative duty which is standard LCPD protocol for such an incident but has since returned to full duty.
