Honduran woman dies in ICE custody

A Honduran woman being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement died at an Albuquerque hospital Friday.

Jeffry Hernandez, 33, entered ICE custody in San Diego two weeks ago and was later transferred to El Paso. After spending a day in El Paso, she was transferred to Milan, New Mexico, where she was housed in the transgender unit.

Hernandez was transported to Lovelace Medical Center in Albuquerque after showing symptoms of pneumonia, dehydration and complications associated with HIV.

She stayed at the hospital for a week and was pronounced dead Friday at 3:32 a.m.

An autopsy is pending regarding her cause of death.

Hernandez allegedly was processed as expedites removal on May 9 at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in California.

Hernandez allegedly entered the United States illegally twice between 2005 and 2009 and was granted voluntary return to Mexico each time since claimed Mexican nationality when encountered by immigration officials.

According to ICE, Hernandez was convicted of theft in April 2006 and convicted of lewd, immoral, indecent conduct and prostitution in May 2009.

Hernandez is the sixth detainee to die in ICE custody since October 2017, according to ICE.
