A mom says spicy chips caused her daughter to have gallbladder surgery

Pop into any grocery or convenience store and you’re bound to find a bag of crunchy chips with spicy seasoning.

A Tennessee mom told WREG_TV those popular snacks made her daughter sick.

“When my daughter had this surgery I knew I had to tell everybody about it,” said Rene Craighead.

She said a doctor told her Hot Cheetos and Takis, to name a few, were causing her daughter to have gastrointestinal issues.

According to Craighead, her daughter ate around four bags of the cheap chips with a kick of spice a week.

“She was eating big bags, taking them to school with her,” Craighead said.

Pediatric gastroenterologist Dr. Cary Canvender said “we do see tons of gastritis, and ulcer-related stuff” associated with consuming similar spicy snacks.

Canvender told WREG-TV that several patients have reported issues due to spicy flavored chips.

“We probably see around 100 kids a month, easily,” he said.
