Former deputies charged after sting operation

Two former detention officers have been indicted in a scheme to smuggle methamphetamine to inmates in a Texas jail.

In an indictment unsealed Thursday, a federal grand jury in San Antonio charged 29-year-old Gabriel Robert Ortiz and 26-year-old Ruben Hernandez on multiple counts, including conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said the agency had received information that the two deputies may have been involved in illegal activity and authorities set up a “sting operation” within the jail.

He says the two deputies committed “various crimes” but declined to comment further on the details of the case.

Prosecutors say the scheme lasted from May 4 to June 22.

The two suspects were probationary deputies.
