Volunteers honor vets at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery
This weekend, the Sun City will host several events ahead of Veteran’s Day.
On Friday morning, more than a dozen volunteers, many of them veterans, showed up to Fort Bliss National Cemetery and braved the cold temperatures to help put up more than fifty American flags along the entrance of the cemetery.
The cemetery director, Jamie Porter, said the flags used were donated to the cemetery by families who once accepted them on behalf of their fallen soldier.
One by one, the flags were secured on metal posts and raised by the volunteers.
Porter said every year volunteers make the event possible.
After the flags were raised, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the cemetery.
Porter said it is a busy weekend for the volunteers because many of them are helping with Saturday’s parade in downtown El Paso and other events to honor vets.
Veterans Day is observed Monday, November 12.
