EPPD: ‘Shots fired’ suspect crashed into vehicles; shot by police as he exited vehicle with gun
A man is in critical condition after he was shot by an officer with the El Paso Police Department.
The shooting happened just before 5:00 a.m. Monday on the 2900 block of Trawood Drive, near George Dieter Drive.
El Paso Police told ABC-7 officers were called to the complex to investigate multiple “shots fired” calls.
As the officers approached the complex, they spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle in the shots fired calls and attempted to pull the vehicle over.
Police said the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and instead drove into the parking lot of the Wind Tree Apartments. As he entered the parking lot, the driver of the vehicle crashed into a parked vehicle inside the complex, police said.
When officers approached the suspect, he allegedly tried running away before pulling out a weapon. Officials told ABC-7 that when officers realized the suspect was armed, tey fired their weapons, striking the man.
Police said the officers rendered first aid on the wounded man, later transported to a hospital for treatment. Police did not reveal how many times the suspect was shot. The man’s identity has not been revealed.
An employee at a Howdy’s convenience store across from the apartment complex told ABC-7 he rushed outside of the store when he heard commotion, and then heard yelling. He heard someone say, “We got him, we got him!”
Police officials said the Crimes Against Persons unit, Internal Affairs, Shooting Review Team and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting involving the officers.
The two police officers involved in the shooting were two and one year veterans of the department, police said.
