New Mexico minimum wage increase signed into law

Monday, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed into law a bill that will increase the state’s minimum wage.

It’s the first minimum wage increase in New Mexico since 2009.

Starting Jan. 1, 2020 employers in the state must pay workers at least $9 an hour, up from $7.50 an hour.

The rate will subsequently rise in each of the next three years: to $10.50 an hour beginning in Jan. 1, 2021; to $11.50 an hour beginning in Jan. 1, 2022; and to $12 an hour beginning in Jan. 1, 2023.

The bill was championed by Gov. Grisham who said, “This increase represents progress. No New Mexican who works 40 hours a week should live in poverty, period.”
