Former El Paso cop guilty of raping woman he met on the job gets 10-years probation, fined $10k

UPDATE: William Alexander received a 10-year suspended sentence Friday. He was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine, given a decade's probation and is required to register as a sex offender.

ORIGINAL REPORT: EL PASO, Texas -- A former El Paso police officer was convicted Thursday afternoon of raping a woman nearly two years ago that he first met while on duty.

The jury deliberated for just over four hours before delivering the guilty verdict against William Alexander.

Alexander was arrested and charged with the sexual assault in May 2018.

Then-Officer Alexander met the victim while responding to a police call involving her; prosecutors said he later met up with the woman and sexually assaulted her.

He resigned from the police force in lieu of being fired.

At the time, Alexander had been a nine-year veteran with the El Paso Police Department.

Alexander faces up to 20 years in prison when the sentencing phase of the trial begins Friday.
