Las Cruces outlines plan for re-opening parks

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- All Las Cruces parks remain closed for Mother's Day weekend, but some may open in the weeks to come.

At this week's special work session for the Las Cruces City Council, the director of the Parks and Recreation Department outlined a phased plan to reopen the parks.

GREEN phase (to open in mid to late-May):

  • Trails
  • Shooting range (by appointment only)
  • RC Airport
  • RC Track
  • Tennis (Lion's only, specified times, every other court, singles play)
  • Pickleball (Apodaca only, specified times, every other court, singles play)

YELLOW phase (to open in June):

  • A park in each district

RED phase (to open in July)

  • Sports fields / dog parks
  • Regional parks
  • Outdoor basketball courts
  • Outdoor fitness gyms
  • Skate park / BMX track
  • Park rentals
  • Handball courts
  • Playgrounds

"We will continue to follow the governor's orders," said Sonya Delgado, the director of Parks and Recreation.

Councilors acknowledged the toll that the closure of parks has played on the mental health of Las Cruces residents.

"People are getting angry; there's angst," said Councilwoman Kasandra Gandara on Friday. "It's really playing a number, not only on our adults, but I think with our children."
