Dona Ana County now has 245 virus infections; Otero County ICE facility outbreak hits 30 cases

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico — New Mexico health officials on Monday announced another 24 coronavirus cases in Dona Ana County, pushing the county's total cases to 245.

The state Health Department also announced there were now 30 confirmed virus cases among immigrants being held at the federal Otero County Processing Center. That was up by 11 from the 19 cases first reported over the weekend.

The facility, run by Immigration and Customs enforcement, has been the site of a significant outbreak in Otero County, which has reported just 12 cases in all among its residents. The two counts are being tallied separately by state health officials.

There were eight additional deaths across the state reported Monday that were attributed to Covid-19. That included four deaths in McKinley County, a rural area along the New Mexico-Arizona border that includes Gallup and part of the Navajo Nation.

At least 208 New Mexicans have now died in total during the pandemic.

The caseload tally to date in New Mexico now numbers 5,069, officials said, noting that Native Americans account for more than half of all the virus infections statewide.
