2 dead in chain-reaction crash of 3 semi-trucks in Hudspeth County

HUDSPETH COUNTY, Texas -- Authorities said a truck driver and his passenger were killed when three semi-trucks were involved in a chain-reaction crash early Thursday morning crash along Interstate-10 in Hudspeth County.

That deadly crash occurred around midnight along I-10 at mile marker 67, about two miles west of Ft. Handcock.

Texas Highway Patrol troopers identified the fatalities as 49-year-old truck driver James Edward Scott of Fort Worth and his passenger, 39-year-old Eddie Charles Causey of Glenn Heights.

Investigators said Scott's tractor-trailer rig was going to fast when it rear-ended another tractor-trailer and pushed it into a third rig.

The drivers of the two semis that were struck, 51-year-old Michael George Bennett from Florida and 55-year-old Juan Jesus Rodriguez of El Paso, were both treated for injuries and later released from Horizon Providence hospital.

At the time of the crash, authorities said traffic was backed up due to a separate incident on the highway involving a flaming semi-truck; there were no injuries in that fire.
