For 2nd day, Las Cruces schools see lockdowns & shelter-in-place due to police activity, lightning
For a second straight day on Friday, a number of schools in Las Cruces experienced a lockdown or shelter-in-place due to police activity as well as lightning in the area.
Highland Elementary was on lockdown for a short time around 9 a.m. due to police activity in the area. Officials said all students and staff were safe and there were no details provided as to what police handled.
Meanwhile, nine other schools in the district where under a shelter-in-place for a portion of the late afternoon due to lightning in the area that was at one point accompanied by a severe thunderstorm.
As of just after 5 p.m., Las Cruces Public Schools said all the shelter-in-place orders were canceled as thunderstorms and lightning had moved out of the area.
On Thursday, numerous schools in Las Cruces also had their day disrupted due to lightning as well as police investigating what officials said was “a potential threat near the area” that did not materialize.
