Homicides & rapes jump in the city of El Paso, according to FBI crime data
Violent crime reports may be down overall in the city of El Paso, but there has been a jump in the number of homicides and rapes.
That is according to the FBI’s 2018 Uniform Crime Report, which is a compilation of data from law enforcement entities across the country.
According to the data, which was submitted to the FBI by the El Paso Police Department, there has been a marked overall decrease in violent crime reports in El Paso city limits, which include murder and manslaughter, rape, robbery and aggravated assault.
In 2018, there were 2,554 reports of violent crimes in the city.
It’s down from 2,609 reports documented in the Uniform Crime Report released by the FBI in 2017.
According to the data, El Paso recorded 23 murders and ‘nonnegligent manslaughters’ in 2018, up by 4 from 2017.
There were 371 reported rapes in 2017 — and that went up to 405 in 2018, according to the UCR.
The FBI changed the way it categorized rapes in 2013, and that just went into effect for 2017 data.
The term “forcible” was removed from the category, and the definition was changed to “penetration, no matter how slight, of the vagina or anus with any body part or object, or oral penetration by a sex organ of another person, without the consent of the victim,” according to a footnote on the report.
What led to the overall drop in violent crimes was the decreased number of robberies and aggravated assault cases in 2018.
According to the UCR, there were 400 robberies in 2017, and 376 in 2018.
There were 1,750 aggravated assault cases in 2018, which is down from 1,819 in 2017.
While property crime was down from year to year, motor vehicle theft went up to 817 in 2018 from 800 in 2017, according to the data.
