2nd trial underway of El Paso police officer for fatally shooting man in the back
The second trial is underway for an El Paso police officer charged with manslaughter for fatally shooting a Lower Valley man in the back in 2015.
Officer Mando Gomez had his first trial earlier this year end in a mistrial after a prosecutor collapsed in court.
Gomez is charged in the shooting death of Erik Emmanual Salas Sanchez, which happened when police responded to a domestic incident.
Gomez, who has been on administrative duty since the shooting more than five years ago, maintained he shot the man because he felt threatened — although court documents obtained by ABC-7 showed Sanchez was shot in the back.
