Woman who raced back into burning home to save animals dies in fire

HOLLISTON, Massachusetts (WCVB) — A woman who raced back into her burning home to save animals died Tuesday after a fast-moving fire broke out in Holliston.
The fire started at midnight in the home on Winter Street.
“Upon arrival we had a call that there was fire in the living room and in the back yard,” Holliston Fire Department Chief Mark Dellicker said.
A couple escaped, but a woman went back inside to try and save some of their dogs.
“The first crew went into the upstairs to the bedroom, where she was reportedly going, and found her and got her out in moments,” Dellicker said.
Suffering from extreme smoke inhalation both the woman and a man in his 80s were taken by ambulance to the hospital, where the woman later died.
“She was into adopting dogs,” neighbor Kevin Swanecamp said. “Caring, great people — always willing to help.”
According to the MetroWest Daily News, animal control was sent to the home in May. An inspection at the time found 34 animals in the home.
“There were quite a few animals that were lost. They were caged, and as we pulled them out we tried to resuscitate,” Dellicker said. “I would venture to say there were three or four that we tried to resuscitate. All the rest were dead when we pulled them out.”
The fire remains under investigation.
