2 new El Paso virus deaths are young men; active infections stay below 1,000

EL PASO, Texas -- El Paso public health officials reported two new coronavirus deaths on Saturday, both young men - one in his 20s and the other in his 30s.

The encouraging news headed into the holiday weekend was that the number of active Covid-19 infections in El Paso County remained below 1,000 and had dropped to even a lower level since Friday's milestone decline.

There were 16 new virus cases reported Saturday, with active infections totaling 945. That infection tally is the lowest since June of a year ago, health department data showed.

In El Paso hospitals on Saturday, there were 83 patients diagnosed with Covid-19 illness, with 28 of those listed in intensive care unit and 21 requiring the use of ventilators.

Officials said during the length of the pandemic so far, 132,393 El Pasoans have contracted the virus and recovered.
