EL PASO, Texas -- A 3-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance after receiving a huge gash on his head at daycare.

"Once I went into the room and I saw him with that big ol' gash, I was scared and I didn't know what to do," said the boy's mother, Mayra Solis.

It happened at the YWCA daycare center on the El Paso Community College Valle Verde Campus.

Mayra Solis said her son was pushed by another child at the daycare.

"He pushed him with so much force, he hit himself on the corner of the door. It [the gash] was pretty deep," Solis said.

At the time of the incident, Mayra said the caregiver was attending to another student, but added she understands accidents happen.

"I don't entirely blame the girl, the daycare provider, cause she has 15 three-year-olds," Solis said.

According to the YWCA spokesperson, there are 60 children enrolled at the daycare. At the time of the incident, there was one caregiver watching 12 3-year-olds.

According to a chart by the Texas Department of Human Services, 15 three-year-olds are allowed per one caregiver.

Mayra told ABC-7 she thinks the policy should change; there should be at least one more caregiver there, to make sure an incident like this doesn't happen again.

Though the injury happened at the daycare, Mayra did not move her son.

"One girl reassured me that she was going to be there for my son, besides the daycare provider." Mayra added, "If I move him to another, there might not be that care for him.

A spokesperson for the YWCA provided this statement:

"The safety of the children in our care is our top priority. This was an incident between two children which was immediately addressed by following our own policies, procedures, and safety standards as well as those set forth by the state. Appropriate action was taken against one of the children while the other remains in our care."
