Signs your loved one could be dealing with suicidal thoughts:

EL PASO, Texas (KVIA) -- It's suicide prevention month. But how do you prevent suicide? Many come as a shock to even close family and friends. Experts say there are certain behaviors that could be telling that someone is struggling.

If someone you know mentions they are having suicidal thoughts, you should take them seriously, and contact a professional.

Chante Franco tried to end her life twice. She wasn't successful. Now, after a neighbor staged an intervention, she's doing much better, and moving forward with her life. But she says not long ago, she didn't feel like life was worth living.

Franco still has intrusive thoughts, and deals with feelings of sadness.

Warning signs that someone may be considering suicide can include withdrawing from family, friends or activities, giving away prized possessions, engaging in reckless behavior, and abusing alcohol or other substances. Many will neglect personal care, or change their behavior significantly, or talk about feeling trapped.

Experts advise if you notice someone exhibiting these behaviors, talk with them and check in on their mental health. Call 9-8-8 or let them know the number so they can get help. The Wounded Warrior project helps veterans and their families as well.
